.38 Special Background
.38 Special was
founded in Jacksonville, Florida, by Donnie Van Zant in 1975. Van Zant was joined by Don Barnes (guitar, vocals); Jeff Carlisi
(guitar); Steve Brookins (drums); Ken Lyons (bass); and Jack Grondin (drums). In 1977,.38 Special inked a contract with A&M
Records and put out their first album. Their self-titled debut effort and their sophomore album, Special Delivery, didn't
make a big splash on the music scene, but the band started to tour regularly to get its brand and name in the face of music
lovers. Rockin' Into the Night dropped in 1979 followed by Wild-Eyed Southern Boys in 1981. The latter album made waves with
its single, "Hold On Loosely." The album eventually earned platinum certification. In 1982, Special Forces arrived, generating
the Top 10 track, "Caught Up in You." The band carried on its successful momentum with Tour de Force (1983) and Strength in
Numbers (1986). Flashback came along in 1987, which was a greatest hits compilation. The album garnered success but the band
used their ingenuity to preserve its audience by cutting the refined Rock & Roll Strategy. Issued in 1989, the album's
success was bolstered by the single "Second Chance" - a modern-day ballad that made its way to the Top 10. They also released
Bone Against Steel (1991); Resolution (1997); A Wild-Eyed Christmas Night (2001); Drivetrain (2004); and.38 Special Live from
These days, the lineup is comprised of Danny Chauncey (guitarist); Don Barnes (guitarist/vocalist); Gary
Moffatt (drummer); Barry Dunaway (bassist); and Bobby Capps (keyboardist). Van Zant hasn't toured with the band for a couple
of years because of health problems but he did lend his talents to recording and writing. In 2013, Van Zant retired from music.
