91x Radio Station Background

In 1982, there were three rock stations in San Diego: 91x, KGB and KPRI. All seemed to follow the same format; filling the airwaves with the same tunes, like Journey, Led Zeppelin and Boston. And the ratings consistently showed 91x ranking in third place. A change was certainly in order.

Meanwhile, in the City of Angels, KROQ was doing very well. The station coined itself "The Rock of The 80's," with the format having been developed by Rick Carroll. A decision was made to bring Carroll to San Diego to duplicate KROQ's success.

The new format was introduced on January 11, 1983. DJ Mad Max was the first one to play music to match the new format.

The DJ's irreverent style and the box of vinyl all fit into what was termed, "the new format." The first song played was Berlin's Sex (I'm A...), paving the way for an out-of-the-box song playlist that San Diegans weren't used to at the time. It didn't take long for the station to be recognized as a true alternative station, cultivating loyal listeners and fans.

In just a few months, 91x ratings experienced a 360-degree turn. And as evidenced by the radio station's three-decade tenure, the "new format" was a smashing success!
