Baseball has been around for well over a century, giving it enough time to gain the reputation as one of the best spectator sports in the entire world. These days, baseball is played in a variety of forms, but seeing pro ballplayers do their thing on the diamond is still as good as it gets if you're looking for a top-tier sporting event. Fun for the whole family and baseball lovers of all ages, the Single-A short season is where you can find a great atmosphere as well as some of the stars of both today and tomorrow, providing plenty of incentive to head out and see the action for yourself this season.

Aberdeen IronBirds History

The Aberdeen IronBirds were founded in 2003 as the Single-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, a top-tier Major League Baseball team that has had some great players and teams over the years. This is a team that also originally started as an affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays back in the 1970s and have been affiliated with the Phillies, the Red Sox, the White Sox and the Marlins, though they moved into a completely different era when they were renamed the IronBirds in honor of owner/operator Cal Ripken Jr. in 2003. Like the Iron Man himself, the IronBirds have consistently brought their A-game to the field throughout the season, providing one great moment after another and helping solidify themselves as staples of the local sports scene around Aberdeen, Maryland.

Aberdeen IronBirds Trivia

Did you know that Cal Ripken Jr. won back-to-back Gold Glove Awards in the early 1990s?

If you want to learn about persistence, all you need to do is look at the career of Cal Ripken Jr. Originally touted as a mediocre defensive shortstop who was always one of the top hitters at his position, Ripken kept working hard defensively and ended up being one of the best in the league with the mitt as well. All in all, Ripken would go to 19 different All-Star games throughout his brilliant career, winning two MVPs and leading the Orioles to a title in 1983.
