About Against Me!
Against Me! formed originally as a solo
act, the brainchild of ultra musician Laura Jane Grace, who at the time recorded under the name Tom Gabel. Grace would typically
perform alone but occasionally with stage musicians, but wrote and recorded all their material on their own. Grace would bounce
around between various record labels, over time picking up additional members including percussionist Kevin Mahon. It wouldn't
be until 2000 that Against Me! had its first official release, with a 2001 follow up that would allow the band to gain real
traction in the national music scene.
Against Me! would see the addition of Dustin Fridkin on bass, but soon see the
loss of Mahon whose seat behind the drum kit would be filled by Warren Oakes. James Bowman rounded out the band on guitars,
creating a full lineup for the first time in Against Me!'s history and paved the way for the release of their first full length
With the success of their debut, Against Me! moved to Fat Wreck Chords and began recording for their second
album. They would be scouted out as one of the most formidable up and coming independent artists on the music scene for the
decade, and released a slew of hit singles alongside their newly recorded album. They built on their momentum with two releases
that would be major for the band's growth: a documentary titled We're Never Going Home, detailing the events of their 2004
tour, and a live album from a London performance that showcased their now international appeal and fanbase.
By the late
2000s, the band was constantly recording and constantly on tour alongside huge acts such as the Silversun Pickups and Billy
Talent. Things continued heating up, but the constant ups and downs of tours took their toll on the members. Warren Oakes
would depart the band, and the band would eventually drop out of a tour scheduled for Oceania to take a brief hiatus. The
band's plans remained up in the air for nearly a year, as they left their old label and had more lineup shakeups. Eventually
they created their own record label, Total Treble Music, which has been home base for Against Me! ever since. The band is
now back on track and is touring on their most recent album, which dropped with much fanfare in early 2014.
Against Me!'s first major release came about in 2002 with Against Me! Is Reinventing Axl Rose. The album would
set the initial course for their signature style and be the definitive starting point to their steady rise in prominence and
popularity. The album received perfect and near perfect marks from Sputnikmusic and Allmusic, respectively, and set expectations
for their sophomore follow up. Against Me! as the Eternal Cowboy displayed the band's first appearance on the charts, eventually
hitting the #36 position on Billboard's US Indie chart.
Just two years later, the band released Searching for a Former
Clarity, a huge success that hit the #1 spot on US Heatseekers and #9 on US Indie. Huge charting successes would become par
for the course as their next three albums - New Wave, White Crosses, and Transgender Dysphoria Blues - all charted at the
#20, #7, and #2 positions, respectively.
The band's lead singer, now known as Laura Jane Grace,
grew up and previously identified as male. While she was previously known as Tom Gabel, today Grace has undergone hormone
therapy and became one of the first major figures in the music industry to out themselves as transgendered. This experience
underpins the emotional direction of the band's most recent album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues.
