Air Force Falcons Basketball Schedule

As a member of the ultra competitive Mountain West Conference, Air Force annually faces off against some of the best college basketball teams in the country. Successfully making it through the challenging Mountain West regular season is an unenviable task but each and every year Air Force proves that they are more than capable of hanging with their highly ranked conference rivals. The Falcons will have ample opportunities to rack up some big wins and should they do well enough in the regular season they may be able to earn an at large bid for the NCAA Tournament. Even if that should fail Air Force will still have a shot at an automatic bid if they can win the Mountain West Tournament.

On Saturday February 22nd the Nevada Wolfpack come to Colorado Springs to take on the Falcons at Clune Arena. Two weeks later on March 1st the UNLV Runnin' Rebels will be in town looking to knock off the Falcons as both teams compete for a higher seed in the upcoming Mountain West Tournament. The regular season comes to a close at Clune Arena on Saturday March 8th with a game against the Boise State Broncos. Although they are newcomers to the Mountain West, Boise State have already made their presence felt in the conference and both teams will be looking to enter the post season with a win.

Air Force Falcons Basketball Conference

In recent years the Mountain West Conference has emerged as a true national powerhouse. There are now eleven members of the Mountain West Conference: San Diego State, UNLV, Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Nevada, Fresno State, Wyoming, Utah State, and San Jose State. Previous members have included TCU, Utah, and BYU. Of the current members, Utah State leads the way with twenty NCAA Tournament appearances. However, so far all of their appearances have come before joining the Mountain West. UNLV and Wyoming, two charter members of the Mountain West, are next in line with 19 and 14 respectively. UNLV and Wyoming are also the only two members of the conference to win a National Championship, with UNLV winning in 1990 and Wyoming winning all the way back in 1943. Lately it has been San Diego State, New Mexico, and UNLV who have dominated the conference on the basketball court with SDSU tearing up the national rankings during the 2013-2014 season. The current season is a celebration marking the fifteenth anniversary of the creation of the Mountain West Conference.

The Experience

Attending a top college basketball game is one of the best experiences to be found in sports. Many of the top student athletes in the world take the court in college basketball, when this is combined with some of the most passionate fans in all of sports there is an atmosphere in the arena that cannot be found anywhere else. When you set foot in Clune Arena for an Air Force Falcons home basketball game this will all be clear. As the teams set up for opening jump ball the fans get on their feet and loudly cheer for their alma mater and hometown favorites. The game continues full of end to end action, big time shots, and clutch defensive stops. All of a sudden the clock is winding down in the second half and the two sides are wrapped up in yet another tight contest. Your palms get sweaty with each trip down the floor and each time a player from your favorite team lets loose a shot you hold your breath until the ball tickles the twine. This continues until the final buzzer when the Falcons' side erupts after another big win and their fans exit of the arena in jubilation.

Air Force Falcons Basketball Rivalries

After playing in the Mountain West Conference for years Air Force has developed rivalries with several teams in the league which they play twice a year. Of course, games against in state rivals Colorado State always are heated battles and the Falcons' fans always get worked up for these matches. Additionally, Air Force is always looking to take down some of the traditional powerhouses of the conference like San Diego State, UNLV, and New Mexico. When any of those three teams come to Clune Arena you can expect the Falcons to give them their best shot and a home win against one of these teams when they are highly ranked could mean the thrill of rushing the court when the final buzzer sounds.

Air Force Falcons Basketball Trivia

The Air Force Falcons have produced two former players who went on to successful coaching careers. Rodney Tention went on to coach at Loyola Marymount from 2005 through 2008 but the most notable former player is San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich who is the longest tenured coach in any major American sport and has won four NBA Championships with the Spurs.
