Air Force Falcons Football Schedule

The College Football season is about to kick off and fans all across the country are counting the days until their team puts on the pads, dons their school colors and takes to the field to play the ultimate team game. The Air Force Falcons are heading into the 2014 season with much optimism and ready to put the 2013 season far behind them. The Falcons finished last season with a 2-10 record and no victories within the Mountain West Conference, but Air Force had many bright spots last season. The Falcons were the 12th ranked running attack in the country, rushing for over 262 yards per game. The Air Force Falcons are known for their speed and they proved just how fast they were. Senior running star Anthony LaCoste may have graduated after last season, but his battery mate Broam Hart will be back and looking to have a breakout season in 2014.

The Mountain West Conference is looking to be strong once again, making the Falcons schedule tough in 2014, but the Falcons and their fans welcome the challenge. One of the first big tests of the season will take place on September 27 at Falcon Stadium when the mighty Boise State Broncos come to Colorado Springs to take on the home team. The Broncos are coming off of another good year, finishing 8-5 and playing in the Hawaii Bowl. The high flying Boise State offense is always a handful for the opponent's defense and the 2014 Broncos will be no different. Falcons fans know that an early season win over the Broncos is just want the home team needs to turn their season in the right direction.

The November 28 meeting of the Falcons and the Colorado State Rams at Falcon Stadium is definitely a game that Falcons fans won't want to miss. These in state rivals have played each other 52 times, tied with Wyoming as the most played opponents, with the Falcons owning the all time series with a record of 30-20-1. The 2014 edition features a very impressive Rams team that finished 2013 with a 8-6 record, but was the 23rd top scoring team in the country, scoring more than 36 points per game. The Falcons defense will have to play a flawless game to beat this high flying Rams offense.

Air Force Falcons Football History

The history of the Air Force Falcons runs back to 1955, just a year after the founding of the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. The first head coach of the Falcons football team wasCol. Robert V. Whitlow, who led the team to a 4-4 record in their first year. The team continued to get better, a great feat, as recruiting requirements for the service academies differs greatly from the schools with whom they compete against. The most successful of all Falcons football teams was the 1985 squad, who finished the season with a 12-1 record, just one win from playing for the National Title. Though the Falcons lost to the #16 BYU Cougars to end their undefeated streak, Hall of Fame Coach Fisher DeBerry and the Air Force squad defeated nine ranked opponents that season, including programs like Notre Dame, Army, Navy, New Mexico, Hawaii and Texas, who they beat in the Bluebonnet Bowl. The 1985 Falcons team featured Chad Hennings, the College Hall of Fame defensive lineman, who was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys. Hennings would go on the play for the Cowboys from 1992-2000, winning three Super Bowl Championships during his fine career.

Air Force Falcons Football Rivalries

College football is home to many outstanding rivalries, many regional, where teams are vying for territorial supremacy. There is no rivalry in the country with the tradition and ritual as the one between the service academies, Army, Navy and Air Force. These three institutions compete annually for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, which was created in 1972, when the Air Force Academy Falcons joined Army and Navy to form a triangular rivalry that captivates the nation every year. On many occasions, the President of the United State, for whom the trophy is named, has awarded the winning side with the trophy in person. Air Force currently leads the three schools with 18 all time trophy wins, with Navy next with 14 wins. Air Force also enjoys a long and storied rivalry with the Colorado State Rams, their in state rivals. Air Force also leads that series with 31 wins to 20 losses.
