The Airborne Toxic Event was born out of a difficult time in band founder, Mikel Jollet's life. Jollett had always been a writer, but he'd never tried his hand at songwriting. The intensity of his circumstances allowed him to tap into his inner musician, and come up with an album's worth of tracks. He asked some of his talented musician friends to join his band. Drummer Daren Taylor, orchestral-trained Anna Bulbrook, upright bass player Noah Harmon and guitarist Steven Chen were soon all a part of Jollett's tribe of reluctant band members. But despite their reluctance to become rock stars, it somehow came naturally, and the band began gaining attention and a loyal following of fans. After playing their first gig, just one month after their formation, The Airborne Toxic Event was receiving rave reviews from Rolling Stone. In 2008, The Los Angeles Times called them one of the top three LA bands to watch. The band signed with Majordomo Records later that year, and released their first self-titled album in August of 2008. Since then, The Airborne Toxic Event has continued to make chart-topping albums, and play to sold-out crowds around the world. They've collaborated with big name stars like Rihanna and Lil Wayne, and have performed Late Night with Conan O'Brien and The Late Show with David Letterman.
