In 1949, Mabel Lamborn Graham received $500 as "seed money" from the Akron Beacon Journal's publisher with the directive
to begin raising money for a professional, union orchestra. Graham and other devoted volunteers spent three years raising
funds, which culminated into the Akron Symphony's Classic Series. The series was established in the organization's debut season
(1952 - 1953) as a vehicle for professional musicians of the highest caliber to perform concerts. Guest soloists and conductors
of regional and national standing have served as an integral part of the Classic Series since its inception, and remain a
high priority for the symphony to this day!
E.J. Thomas Hall is home to The Akron Symphony Orchestra, Tuesday Musical Association, Akron Youth Symphony and the Children's
