The University of Akron Zips football team has a long and storied history, dating all the way back to 1891.
In fact, they have one of the oldest football programs in the entire country. The Zips started out as a small school team
in the 1930s, but have grown considerably and consistently since then. The program earned Division II classification in the
1970s, and finally earned Division I-A status in the late 1980s. The Zips are a part of the Mid-American Conference, and have
proven themselves to be a powerhouse among the top teams in their conference from one year to the next, helping to make them

What was the highest draft pick in
the history of the program?
The answer was Charlie Frye, who was drafted with the 67th overall pick in the 2005 draft
by Cleveland. Frye, a four-year starter for the Zips, was one of the very best players in program history. In 2002, Frye would
set the program record for highest completion percentage in a season for a starting quarterback, completely passes at a rate
of 65.8%. Frye wasn't done setting program records, however, as he would also end up setting the single-season passing record
(3,549 yards) as well as program marks for all-time passes, completions, completion percentage, yards and touchdowns.
