Al Green was born on April 13, 1946 in Forrest City, Arkansas. He was the son of a sharecropper, and got his start in
music at the age of nine when he sang in a local quartet. Green progressed through different bands until he was discovered
by a record executive and signed to a contract. His solo start was successful, but tragedy struck early in his career. An
ex-girlfriend killed herself in Green’s home. Green emerged from that experience a more spiritual person, a quality
that can be seen in his music today.
A legend of soul and gospel, Green turned to Christianity, and eventually became a pastor. His output has hardly slowed
in recent years, and the reverend still knows how to make his voice soar. In 2008, his most recent release, Lay It Down,
featured an update on his classic sound and numerous musical guests, including?uestlove of The Roots. Green is a musical
