Al Green was born on April 13, 1946 in Forrest City, Arkansas. He was the son of a sharecropper, and got his start in music at the age of nine when he sang in a local quartet. He turned down a proposal from his fiancee, who in turn committed suicide. Green decided to turn to Christianity, and his work has been more gospel-oriented ever since.
