Alan Parsons Live Project Background

Alan Parsons' family carries some pretty impressive lineage. His mother was a professional folk singer, actress and harpist, while his father was a successful pianist and flautist as well as a notable author. His great grandfather, Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, was the acclaimed actor/manager. David Tree, his uncle, was additionally an actor for both film and stage.

Parsons toyed with live performance in his teenage years. He followed in his mother's footsteps, fiddling around with folk music and blues. He additionally was a lead guitarist with a blues band in his London hometown in the late '60s.

Parsons' destiny changed when he scored a job at the Abbey Road Studios when he was just 19. It was a prominent move that determined Parsons' career path in the world of sound recording.

As an assistant engineer, Parsons was lucky enough to work on The Beatles' final two albums, and after he became a recording engineer, he went on to work with talents like The Hollies, Paul McCartney and many others. But his breakthrough moment occurred when he worked as an engineer on the iconic Dark Side of the Moon album by Pink Floyd. That project opened many doors for him as a producer, working on successful albums like Al Stewart's Year of the Cat.

Parsons met Eric Woolfson in 1975 when Woolfson became his manager. Together, theydecided to make records and established The Alan Parsons Project. Parsons wanted to try his hand at making his own music and released The Alan Parsons Project's debut Tales of Mystery And Imagination. The album was followed by numerous hit albums, like Pyramid (1978); Eye in the Sky (1982); Ammonia Avenue (1984); and more.

The Alan Parsons Project continued their success throughout the '80s and '90s and is back again under the guise of the Alan Parsons Live Project.

The Alan Parsons Project has returned to the stage as the group's sound from the '70s has seen resurgence in today's society.

Over the years, The Alan Parsons Project has come out with albums like: I Robot (1977); Pyramid (1978); Eve (1979); The Turn of a Friendly Card (1980); Eye in the Sky (1982); Ammonia Avenue (1984); Vulture Culture (1984); Stereotomy (1985); and Gaudi (1987).

Alan Parsons has acquired several impressive awards over his career, including: 11 Grammy nominations, The Les Paul Award in 1995 and more recently, The Diva Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award in Munich, Germany, in 2012. Parsons is additionally in demand as a public speaker, serving as the keynote speaker at the 1998 Audio Engineering Society Convention in San Francisco and the opening speaker at the TEDx Conejo conference in California in 2012.

Since the beginning of 2012, along with performing live shows, Alan Parsons has been dedicating much of his time to doing vocals for German Electronica outfit, Lichtmond. He has also collaborated with Chris Squire, Billy Sherwood, Aleks Syntek and Jake Shimabukoro.

But not to worry; he still has time for road trips. Since 1993, there's a whole new band touring with Parsons. On these tours, Parsons plays live acoustic guitar, vocals, keyboards including different lineups. This latest manifestation was dubbed, Alan Parsons, eventually rechristened Alan Parsons Live Project. The name change stemmed from Parsons' separation from Woolfson.
