The Florida Gulf Coast University is the youngest public four year university in the state of Florida, having only established itself in 1991 by then-governor Lawton Chiles. In 2006 the team was granted NCAA Atlantic Sun Conference standing and for the 2007-2008 season moved to Division I sports. In 2008 the women's basketball team qualified for the WNIT Tourney and became the first Atlantic Sun conference team to win a post season game since 1998.
