Alice in Chains Background

Hailing from Seattle, Alice in Chains quickly became local legends, taking over the rock scene in the Pacific Northwest. While in high school, Layne Staley gathered together a group of aspiring musicians and formed a band. In 1987, he met Jerry Cantrell, and the two re-imagined Staley's band, ultimately forming Alice in Chains. With the addition of Sean Kinney and Mike Starr, the band was complete, and they began cranking out their edgy and grunge-inspired rock songs. Just two years after Cantrell and Staley formed the band, Alice in Chains signed to Columbia Records and released a promotional EP, We Die Young. With the push of Columbia Records, Alice in Chains was soon touring the country, opening for major artists like Poison and Iggy Pop.

The group became popular with the grunge-scene fans due to their dark and biting songs that dwelt on heavy subjects like death and drug addiction. Their album Facelift (1991) went on to sell half a million copies, and featured the hit single, "Man in the Box", which went on to receive a Grammy nomination. Their next album, Dirt (1992), proved to be even more successful, eventually selling over 3 million copies. By this point in their career, there was no doubt that Alice in Chains was one of the biggest rock groups of the time. Over the next decade, the band continued to crank out phenomenal rock hits, earning millions of fans around the world. However, in 2002, a tragedy halted the band's momentous success. Layne Stayley was discovered dead in his apartment after battling a serious drug addiction for many years. It was years before the three remaining members decided to reunite, and they did so at a benefit concert in Seattle for tsunami disaster victims. For years after, the band reunited for a handful of shows and even short tours, and now the acclaimed band is back and ready to hit the stage for several shows this summer.
