Alicia Keys was born Alicia Cook in the Hell's Kitchen area of Manhattan, where she was raised by a single mother. Her strength and goal of empowering the women that listen to her music comes from the influence of her mother. Her first studio album, Songs in A Minor, was released in 2001 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 charts. It sold over 6 million copies in the US and 12 million internationally.
