Bela Fleck was born on July 10, 1958, and grew up in New York. He was named after composer Bela Bartok. He learned to play the banjo at the age of 15 after seeing a performance by Flatt and Scruggs. While still in high school he began experimenting with the instrument, signing with the New Grass Revival in ’82. He created the Flecktones in ’89, winning several Grammy Awards in 1996-2001.
