from Leeds, England, Alt-J is the product of four visionary Brit musicians who met while attending Leeds University in England:
Bassist Gwil Sainsbury, vocalist and guitarist Joe Newman, percussionist Thom Green and keyboardist Gus Unger-Hailton. The
band began a loose collaboration during their sophomore year of studies, utilizing the close quarters of college life to create
and produce their earliest sounds, setting down a unique style that would later make them an undefinable fixture of the indie
rock music scene. Upon graduation, the four stuck together and made the move to Cambridge, putting all their efforts towards
recording and rehearsing as they looked to make their big break onto the British music scene.
Two years out of college,
the band would release their debut EP on Loud and Quiet records, and soon pick up a major record deal with Infectious Records
that would cement their eventual rise into mainstream stardom. By 2012 their first full length had dropped, and they would
bring their music on the road with performance in Ireland and the UK, including a litany of festival appearances that quickly
built a cult Alt-J following all across the Britain and Ireland. By the end of 2012 the band had built up enough momentum
from lighting up UK venues that they made their first transatlantic venture to North America, with a winter tour to cap off
the band's most successful year to date.
The band's North American fan base would blow up overnight, with them spending
2013 hitting all corners of the continent, including visits to the most legendary festivals in existence today including Chicago's
Lollapalooza, California's Coachella Music and Arts Festival, San Diego's Wrex the Hall, and Washington state's Sasquatch!
festival. They would have critical accolades rained down upon them, including a British Mercury Prize, numerous Brit Awards,
Album of the Year from BBC Radio 6, and another Album of the year win from the Ivor Novello Awards. The band is showing no
signs of slowing down as they continue their global tour trek, hitting every corner of the globe where great music and good
times are appreciated.
The band's greatest success to date is the recent release This Is
All Yours, dropping in 2014 at the height of Alt-J fever and hitting the number one spot on the UK music charts, along with
top five showing in Australia, Belgium, France, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United States. The album received widespread
critical praise, with four star ratings from AllMusic, The Guardian, and Mojo, and has so far spawned three hard hitting singles:
"Hunger of the Pine", "Left Hand Free", and "Every Other Freckle".
The band utilizes the mathematical
sign for change, ∆, as their band symbol. The name "Alt-J" derives from a keyboard shortcut to produce the ∆ symbol
on some Apple keyboards.
