Alternative Rock first emerged in the 1980s but became very popular in the 1990s. The term alternative was used in the eighties to refer to punk rock bands on independent record labels that did not fit into the current musical genres. Though the genre is described as “rock” the music is often heavily influenced by folk, reggae, electronic music and jazz among many others.
Though many alternative rock bands achieved great fame, a few artists like R.E.M. and The Cure gained great commercial success and mainstream critical recognition. After the introduction of Nirvana onto the mainstream airwaves, alternative rock became a regular household name.
