Punk rock band Green Day's "American Idiot" musical is the stage adaptation of their album of the same
name. The hit sensation made its premiere at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2009, after which it moved to the St. James
Theatre on Broadway, officially opening on April 20, 2010. Borrowed from their concept album, the story of American Idiot
follows the lives of three young men, Johnny, Will, and Tunny. Growing restless of their mundane, suburban lifestyles, Johnny
and Tunny flee to the city in an attempt to find freedom and excitement, while Will stays home with his pregnant girlfriend.
As the story plays out, audience members are treated to the energetic music that Green Day fans have come to know and love,
while themes of lost love and disillusionment are demonstrated on stage.
American Idiot's book was written by Billie
Joe Armstrong and director Michael Mayer, and the music was composed by Green Day. In addition to the hit tracks on the American
Idiot album, additional songs for the musical were written, including "21st Century Breakdown" and "When It's Time".
American Idiot premiered at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, it became the top-grossing show in the theater's history. The
cast at this time included John Gallagher Jr. as Johnny, Matt Caplan as Tunny, Michael Esper as Will, and Tony Vincent as
St. Jimmy. The Broadway production went on to win a number of awards, including a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director
of a Musical, Tony Awards for Best Scenic Design of a Musical and Best Lighting Design of a Musical, an Outer Critics Circle
Award for Outstanding Lighting Design, and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
After many successful runs, there
was also a documentary film made about the production, called Broadway Idiot. The behind-the-scenes film was directed by Doug
Hamilton, who is a well known television journalist for CBS News' 60 Minutes and various PBS documentaries. The film premiered
at the South by Southwest Film Festival on March 15, 2013, and viewers got an inside look into the creation of the musical.
