American Music Awards

The American Music Awards was first conceived in 1973 by famed emcee Dick Clark as an alternative to the Grammy Awards after his home network, ABC, allowed their exclusive broadcasting contract to expire. Dick Clark also wanted to establish an award system that is based off public polls, airplay, and media presence, as he felt it was a more appropriate barometer for accolades than the model used by the Grammy Awards, in which the results are voted upon by members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The first telecast for the American Music Awards was in 1974, with Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson co-hosting along with Rodney Allen Rippy and Ricky Segall.
