Written by actor/playwright/composer Hershey Felder, An American Story for Actor and Orchestra is inspired by the young
Union Army medic, Dr. Charles Augustus Leale, who was the first on hand to assist Lincoln in his box at the Ford's Theatre
the night Lincoln was assassinated. Leale remained at the President's side and cared for him until he took his last breath.
Known for his remarkable one-man shows, Felder came upon Leale's speech when he was researching another topic at the Library
of Congress. Leale presented the speech, Lincoln's Last Hours, years later on what would have been Lincoln's 100th birthday.
Fedler was quoted in the Pasadena Sun saying that Leale's speech "touched me deeply and it always interested me, why he kept
it quiet. I think I understand. It must have been so hard for him to have witnessed that, and to know that he had the responsibility
for the country's sake to keep the President alive as long as possible so that a safe transference of power could happen."
Felder assumes the role of Leale at age 90, who serves as the production's narrator, unfolding the story of that night at
Ford's Theatre nearly 70 years earlier.
The emotionally stirring An American Story is based on a young Union Army medic, Dr. Charles Augustus Leale's, speech and
the words of Abraham Lincoln. Notable playwright Hershey Felder unravels a defining moment in history, using all the tools
of the master storyteller he showcased in prior one-man shows about Leonard Bernstein, Beethoven and George Gershwin. Felder
