Ana Gabriel Background

Ana Gabriel was first introduced to the stage at the tender age of six when she performed Jose Alfredo Jimenez's song, "Regalo A Dios." At the age of 15, she relocated to Tijuana, Mexico to take up accounting. When she was 21, she cut her debut song, called "Comprendeme." In 1987, Gabriel claimed third place at Lisbon's OTI Festival with an orchestral rendition of "Ay Amor." She eventually issued the single and it made its way up to the top spot in Mexico. It also cracked the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart, settling there for 14 weeks in a row. Her debut album, Tierra de Nadie, dropped in 1988, with Pecado Original following a year later. But it was her 1990 effort that put on the map. Quien Como Tu cemented her status on the Mexican music scene. Just eight months later, she came out with En Vivo, which highlighted her moving live performance. The album generated multiple hits including "Solamente una Vez," "Hice Bien Quererte" and "Propuesta." Gabriel focused her attention on cutting an album nearly every year throughout the '90s. A multi-dimensional singer, she illuminated her gift as an interpreter of various musical formats, from mariachi to pop music to amorous ballads to lambada. She additionally refined her talents as a producer and a composer, putting out the ranchera-inspired Mi Mexico in 1991. This authentic mix of styles was also mirrored in the compositions, all penned by Gabriel. She used the words of her tunes to portray women as being proactive in their romantic lives, bucking the traditional, passive roles described in older tunes. Also in 1991, she landed a No. 1 hit with a duet she collaborated with Vikki Carr on. The song was "Cosas del Amor," which garnered Gabriel a Lo Nuestro Award for Song of the Year (1992). Her album, Mi Mexico, claimed the Regional Mexican Album of the Year award at the same ceremony. She was also honored with the Female Artist of the Year for the Regional Mexican category along with Pop Female Artist of the Year. Viven-cias came out in 1996, followed by Con un Mismo Corazon (1997), which she composed and produced herself. One of the most treasured pieces on the album is a duet with Vicente Fernandez. In 1998, she put out an additional live album, En la Plaza de Toros Mexico. She topped off the decade with her album, Soy Como Soy, which helped her take home the Ritmo Latino Music Award for Female Pop Artist of the Year. She released a string of albums throughout the 2000s, including Eternamente (2000); Dulce y salado (2003); and more.
