Rieu was born in 1949 in Maastricht, Netherlands, and he was discovered as a prodigy early in life. His father was a conductor, and he began to study the violin when he was five years old. His childhood musical exposure consisted of a strict diet of classical music until he went to university and was introduced to the waltz genre. It piqued his interest, and in 1987 he began to perform with the Johann Strauss Orchestra, touring the world.
