Andrew Peterson has humble beginnings to his music career. For simple love of the music, he toured the country with his wife and guitarist in 1996 until he was discovered by members of the Contemporary Christian group Caedmon's Call. The two groups hit it off so well that Peterson went on to join them on their 1998 tour. In 1999, he signed with Essential Records, based out of Franklin, Tennessee. Though he self-released his first album "Walk" in 1996, in 2000 he released his second album on through his label. "Carried Along" met positive reviews, but it was Peterson's third album released the next year, "Clear to Venus", that met praise from throughout the Christian rock world. 2003 brought the release of "Love and Thunder", and in 2004 he released his fifth album, "Behold the Lamb of God". 2005's "The Far Country" was released on Fervent Records.
Christian rock got its start in the early 1960s as a response to popular rock music's suggestive dancing and lyrics. While Elvis gyrated his hips onstage, fans of Christian rock to go elsewhere for their entertainment, creating a scene for themselves. It should be noted though, while the dancing Elvis did onstage offended many, his release of a gospel album several years later won over many music fans. Though the scene burgeoned in the 1980s, it wasn't until the 1990s that Christian rock really broke through to the mainstream.
