Many great movements and ideas have formulated in Raleigh, but none have been so grand and great as Annuals,
the experimental indie alt rock sensations that have been reforming the musical landscape since their genesis in 2003. The
brainchild of musician and entertainer Adam Baker, Annuals has been rocking the music scene for more than a decade since its
formation from their 2005 debut to their recent 2013 release. Originally a side project between Baker and longtime collaborator
Kenny Florence, Annuals has taken on a life of its own and remains at the forefront of the next generation of experimental
The product of various garage jam sessions between friends, Annuals would practice and perfect their sound for
two years before finally venturing out into the mainstream. After years of recording and producing their own records, the
band finally signed on with Ace Fu Records and began to work on their first full length release. The band quickly gained traction
after their debut release, getting exclusive spotlights via a flurry of media organizations that all saw Annuals as one of
the most important up and comers in the hybrid indie alt scene.
The hype would build early for the band as they were
featured on the Infinite Mixtape, hosted by famous Pitchfork Media, which quickly cascaded into spots all over the internet
including Spin, AOLMusicIndie, Stereogum, and EarFarm. They would be one of the early pioneers of the online music generation,
with their music spreading via crowdsourcing and independent media critics, instead of typical label based promotion. They
would quickly begin to be pumped into the nation's bloodstream as they picked up appearances on late night television, including
two performances on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. They would also become a favorite for TV soundtracks, including having
their single "Fair" featured on the Veronica Mars show.
The band has stuck to their internet band roots, continually
getting spotlights across the web (including I Guess I'm Floating, Brooklyn Vegan, and the Underrated) and utilizing Facebook
as one for their primary platforms for promoting themselves.
Be He Me would be Annuals'
debut full length, dropping in 2006 and starting the Annuals hype machine thats been perpetually in motion ever since. The
album would be released on Ace Fu Records and was primarily written and composed by Annuals' front man Adam Baker. Be He Me
would be a big hit all across the critical spectrum, averaging four stars from Allmusic, Spin, and This is Fake DIY and garnering
an 86% rating from AbsolutePunk.net. The album charted the signature style of Annuals that would remain an intrinsic part
of the band's music, quintessentially demonstrated by the singles "Brother", "Fair", and "Carry Around".
much anticipated follow up, Wet Zoo, would again murder critics as it received an 8/10 from QRO magazine and an aggregate
favorable rating from various blog critics. The album was split with Sunfold, Annuals' sister band that is headed up by various
band members of Annuals. Wet Zoo was again produced by musician extraordinaire Adam Baker, ensuring that signature Annuals
style was alive and well in all of the record's tracks. Though 2008 would be a big year for Annuals fans, Wet Zoo's only shortcoming
is its short length, featuring just five tracks. The quality of those tracks - such as "Just Stay In" and "Around Your Neck"
- would more than makeup for the lack of quantity with an undeniable abundance of quality.
band has been on official hiatus since mid 2013, with the anticipation building for an Annuals reunion tour each and every
Though the band is headed up by Adam Baker, the performing cast is an ensemble with seven musicians on stage performing
at a time.
