The original idea for Anything Goes was conceived by producer Vinton Freedley. Freedley, who was living on a boat to dodge
U.S. creditors, set his idea in motion by selecting the writing team, P.G. Wodehouse and Guy Bolton. The starlet he had in
mind for the main role was Ethel Merman. The first draft was called, Crazy Week, which then changed to Hard to Get, and finally
settled on Anything Goes. The book was heavily revised by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, who changed the original storyline
about a bomb threat, shipwreck and hijinks on a desert island, to a story about madcap antics aboard an ocean liner set sail
