This hilarious musical comedy was first conceptualized in the 1930s by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse. It involved a tragic event on the ship that included a bomb threat, a shipwreck and hijinks on a desert island. But when a ship called the Morro Castle wrecked off of the coast of New Jersey right before rehearsals began, the director and a press agent quickly collaborated on a new script. Because the script had to be completed so quickly, the producers started saying "anything goes," when it came to what was included in the script. Cole Porter leant his genius for the legendary music, and every song is a spirit-lifting tune that was perfect for an audience escaping the sadness of the depression.
