Apollo Theater New York

Apollo Theater Schedule

There's no place for theatrical entertainment that can live up to the performing arts scene in New York City, and for good reason. The Big Apple is known for bringing some of the most world-renowned artists and productions to its stages for live entertainment all throughout the year, and it's venues like the famed Apollo Theater that keep the city in business. The Apollo Theater is one of the most renowned venues in the state of New York, and its longtime location in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City makes it a must-see in the city. The theater hosts all kinds of events throughout the year, most frequently musical performances. Theme nights at the venue known as the Apollo Music Cafe and Amateur Night bring out an eclectic mix of performers, and there's truly something for every live music fan at this music hall, with nightly entertainment on the schedule.

Apollo Theater Trivia

Do you remember the James Brown and the Famous Flames album Live at the Apollo? The album was recorded live at the Apollo Theater in New York in 1962, and was an instant success for the world famous artist. Live at the Apollo rocketed up the Billboard charts and made an astounding 66-week run on the pop charts, peaking at No. 2 and earning the Apollo Theater an even bigger name than it had previous to that album's release. James Brown was such a fan of the Apollo Theater that he went on to record three more live albums at the venue, speaking for the venue's state-of-the-art acoustics. There have been several other artists record live albums at the Apollo Theater over the last several decades, including B.B. King, Marva Whitney, Clyde McPhatter, the Mighty Clouds of Joy and Robert Palmer, among others.

Apollo Theater Background

The Apollo Theater has been a Harlem hotspot for decades, with the venue first opening in 1934 after taking over the venue that was first erected as the Hurtig & Seamon's New Burlesque Theater. The Apollo Theater became known as a mostly African American venue from the '30s forward, bringing out some of the best talent of the area and catering to the neighborhood's demographic. Despite there being tons and tons of renowned venues in the area, the Apollo Theater rose to fame as one of the most popular among star performers, with jazz shows often taking the spotlight at the venue. Some of the biggest musical legends of all time have performed on stage at the Apollo, including artists like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Adelaide Hall, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, the Jackson 5, Ne-Yo, Ray Charles, Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, Anita O'Day and lots of other big-name acts. The Apollo Theater still functions today as a top place to catch a live jazz performance, yet again thriving after a period of decline in the '70s and '80s.

Apollo Theater Trivia

What kind of theater has its very own Hall of Fame? One that is big enough to rope in some of the most renowned artists in the nation time after time, of course. The Apollo Theater is such a popular and historical venue that it has created its very own Apollo Theater Legends Hall of Fame, and some of the biggest names in music have been indicted into the Hall of Fame, including Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, Michael Jackson, the Pips, Little Richard and Quincy Jones. This gives fans an idea of the magnitude and prestige of performing at the Apollo Theater, and the venue's legacy continues with big-name acts still performing on a nightly basis at the venue.

Apollo Theater Experience

The Apollo Theater's inclusion as a designated venue on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and a NYC Landmark has made it a go-to theater in New York City, and music fans from all over the world have come to the Apollo to take in a live performance. The theater reels in an estimated 1.3 million patrons every year, and the revolving door of talent makes this intimate venue an absolute must-see in the Big Apple. Theatergoers that make their way to the Apollo Theater for a musical performance can expect to be dazzled by the interior of the theater as well as the live performance, and there are all kinds of big acts on the lineup in the upcoming months that will make the Apollo one of the most visited theaters in the country. The Apollo Theater has been known for kickstarting the careers of several world-renowned vocalists over the last few decades, and it continues to thrive as top talent comes knocking down the doors of the theater on a nightly basis. No matter who is performing on stage at the Apollo, fans can expect a memorable experience at every show.
