Aretha Franklin was born in Memphis, Tennessee, where she was continuously
surrounded by music. Her father was an itinerant preacher and her mother was a highly skilled piano player and vocalist, so
Franklin developed her love of music and of performing at a very young age. Franklin's father was famous for giving extremely
emotional and rousing sermons, resulting his nickname as the man with "the million-dollar voice". He became somewhat of a
celebrity, and ended up traveling all over the country to give his in-demand sermons to thousands of people at a time. Soon,
other celebrities started making regular appearances at the Franklin household, such as James Cleveland, Inez Andrews, Sam

Grow Old" and "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" became great hits on gospel radio stations. Eventually, she confessed to her father
that she wanted to pursue a career in pop music rather than in gospel music. Her father agreed to help her, and she signed
with Columbia Records in 1960. Aretha's first single released on Columbia was "Today I Sing the Blues", which scored a spot
in the top 10 on the Hot Rhythm and Blues Sellers chart.
Throughout the 1960s, Aretha's fame exploded, as her singles
continued to climb to the tops of music charts around the world and she became renowned for her phenomenal live performances.
