About Art Garfunkel
from New York City, Art was born in 1941 under the name Arthur Ira Garfunkel. His interest in music would begin in first grade,
and would continue to throughout his education as he spent most of his leisure time creating and refining original pieces.
Art would dabble in theater in the sixth grade, where he would meet musical aficionado Paul Simon. The two would form a fast
friendship and begin playing together under the band name Tom & Jerry. By 1957 the duo would release their first album,
alongside some of Garfunkel's own solo material.
Art would go on to study at Columbia University, performing in the
Kingsmen, his university's a cappella group. He would study art history then later attain a masters in mathematics, before
eventually reforming with old band member Paul Simon. The two would finally take up the much beloved named Simon and Garfunkel
and sign onto Columbia Records. They would release a plethora of albums as well as contribute almost exclusively to the soundtrack
of Mike Nichols' film The Graduate. Simon and Garfunkel would part ways in 1970, but not after Art had become one half of
the most memorable band of a decade.
Art would continue to write and perform, both as a solo artist and in collaborations
with Paul Simon. He would also dabble in acting, including acting in Mike Nichols' film Catch-22, and would become one of
Nichol's favorite actors. The two would also write music for each other's respective solo careers. By 1990, the two would
be introduced into the Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, then in 2003 would be the recipients of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement
Art's collaboration efforts include the legendary albums Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.,
Sounds of Silence, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, Bookends, and Bridge over Troubled Water. During this era Art would
help write and record the tracks "The Boxer", " "Mrs. Robinson", "The Sounds of Silence", and "Bridge Over Troubled Water".
His first solo work after parting ways with Paul Simon was Angel Clare, which would hit #5 on the US Billboard. It would be
carried by the popular single "All I Know". His second album, aptly named Second Avenue, would be a breakaway success and
would cement Garfunkel as a musical heavyweight in his own right.
Garfunkel would return in part to collaboration with
his 1975 album Breakaway, which included "My Little Town" which was written and recorded along with Paul Simon. Alongside
his other single for the album "I Only Have Eyes For You", Garfunkel's solo career was in full swing. Art would continue to
be an influence on the musical scene for three decades, from his idiosyncratic Fate For Breakfast and Scissors Cut to his
recent 2007 release Some Enchanted Evening.
Believing that Art's solo material was lacking substance,
Paul Simon wrote the single "My Little Town" for Garfunkel. Many would confuse the album for being about Art's hometown -
in fact, it's written about Paul Simon's.
After a legendary reunion tour in 2004, Simon and Garfunkel would play a packed
concert at the Colosseum in Rome. The concert would draw over 600,000 people.
In 1972, the duo would put on a performance
in honor of their preferred presidential candidate George McGovern. Even the star power of Simon and Garfunkel could not secure
McGovern the oval office.
