Raised in Cuba, Arturo Sandoval began playing the classical trumpet when he was 12 and was studying at the Cuban National School of the Arts by age 15. He was influenced by jazz legends like Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, and Dizzy Gillespie who later became his mentor and colleague, playing with Sandoval in Europe and Cuba. He joined an Afro-Cuban band in the '70s and eventually put together his own band, releasing his first American album Flight to Freedom not long afterward. With the success of his first album and subsequent albums, he has earned nine Grammy Awards and has been nominated 17 times. He has also received numerous Billboard Awards and an Emmy Award.
