Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was officially founded in 1945. The Orchestra was originally named the Atlanta Youth Symphony,
before it switched to its current name in 1947. Since then, the Orchestra has been attracting many renowned soloists, such
as Isaac Stern and Glenn Gould.
In 2008, the ASO opened its new 12,000-seat Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Alpharetta,
Georgia. With a budget expected to expand to $50 million, and with its new Amphitheatre being finished, the ASO has become
one of the six or seven biggest orchestras in America, in terms of budget size. That budget includes the costs of production,
musician and staff salaries and benefits, education, community outreach, special events, and fundraising.
the Orchestra has been planning for the construction of a new main concert hall. In addition to the Verizon Amphitheatre,
the Orchestra plays a lengthy outdoor summer pops concert series at Chastain Park and other parks in the Atlanta area.
