Austra was formed in 2009 by keyboardist and vocalist Katie Stelmanis, drummer Maya Postepski and former Spiral Beach bassist Dorian Wolf. They are also backed by twin singers Sari and Romy Lightman of Tasseomancy and keyboardist Ryan Wonsiak of the Boyfriends. Stemanis and Postepski had previous band experience with a group called Galaxy, but never saw the success that Austra has seen. The group began performing under the name Private Life. But when they realized another band was already performing under that name, they quickly chose an alternative. It just happened to be Stelmanis' middle name. The name also comes from Latvian mythology which calls Austra the goddess of light.
