Hailing from Westwood High School, Authority Zero burst onto the punk scene in the mid 90's as the project
of Bill Marcks, J.W. Gordon, and Jerry Douglas. In true punk fashion the band picked up their instruments and started playing,
eschewing typified elements that the rock scene had normalized such as bass and, for a while, lyrics. Eventually the band
would be joined by Jason DeVore, whose catchy lyrics meshed well with the band's sound, and along with bassist Jeremy Wood,
the first full incarnation of Authority Zero was born.
DeVore's lyrics and Wood's innovative basslines would round out
Authority Zero's hectic sound, creating a truly unique punk sound that borrowed from various genres while simultaneously being
something wholly unique. The band would lose and gain various members over the years, but the signature Authority Zero sound
would carry on through personnel changes and hard times. Their music has also remained a dynamic and freeflowing art form,
borrowing elements from all elements of punk, including skate punk, surf rock, and ska punk, and even bothering from genres
as far as reggae.
The band's big break came in 2002, and they quickly took to the road with likeminded performers on
the famed Vans Warped Tour. They would also get exclusive spots touring alongside musical greats such as Sum 41, Guttermouth,
and Everclear. In true punk fashion, the band's music took on political overtones during the early 2000s in response to the
second Iraq war.
The band is still hitting the road hard, and is consistently writing and recording new material. Though
they've faced several departures of key personnel, the spirit of Authority Zero has lived and is clearly demonstrated in their
most recent 2013 release. The band has built a worldwide following, having tour dates not just in the United States but across
the pond and beyond, including all around Europe and Russia.
The band's debut album A Passage
in Time dropped in 2002, after a nearly decade buildup from the formation of the band. Released on Lava/Atlantic records,
the album would be recorded under the tutelage of producer Dave Jerden and be an instant breakout success, putting Authority
Zero on the national map and expanding upon their already loyal and budding local fanbase. Various music critics, on and off
the mainstream, heaped praise upon the album, describing them as a zen blend of Bad Religion, Blink 182, Sublime, and Pennywise.
politically charged and much anticipated followup Andiamo would again drop on Lava records, but feature producer credits by
well knowns Ryan Greene and Michael Happoldt. The album contained popular hits, including a well known cover of the song "Mexican
Radio", and originals "Revolution" and "Taking on the World".The album would garner three and a half stars from media critic
Allmusic, and cemented the band's position as a punk influence.
The band's most recent album The Tipping Point dropped
in mid 2013, and was a pointed departure from their earlier work with heavy melodic reggae tones. WIth hits like "No Other
Place", "On the Brink" and "Endless Roads", The Tipping Point as an immediate crowd favorite that garnered both commercial
and critical success.
