Backyard Brawl Teams

Anyone who knows anything about college football knows that the West Virginia Mountaineers have one of the top programs around the nation from year to the next, filled with rosters that have explosive playmakers that can change the dynamic of a big game in a real hurry. The Mountaineers have put many of their best players into the NFL, and watching them play is akin to watching many of the stars of both today and tomorrow.

And that's also what you'll be getting with their rival, the Pittsburgh Panthers. Though they're also known for their basketball prowess, they've had plenty of success on the gridiron as well. The Panthers have nine claimed national titles and some of the greatest players ever, with Mike Ditka, Tony Dorsett, Chris Doleman and Rickey Jackson representing just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to some of the top players that have come through campus. Put these two powerhouse programs together on the football year after year and no one is surprised to find fireworks as the result.

Backyard Brawl History

The Backyard Brawl is one of the oldest rivalry games in all of NCAA football, as the very first Backyard Brawl game was held in 1895, giving fans some major thrills in more than a century of top-tier college football. Though things are quite a bit different from the early days, the intensity remains the same, and fans of both schools routinely pour into the stadium to see a great matchup. There's no surprise that there are lots of twists and turns in many of these games, and these two teams have gone back and forth for generations at this point, making this into one of the premier rivalries in all of college athletics.

Backyard Brawl Trivia

Did you know that Dan Marino doesn't even have the most Pro Bowls for Pittsburgh alumni?

Though Marino torched many of the record books at the time after he came out of the Pittsburgh program in the mid-1980s, his nine NFL Pro Bowls has been tied or surpassed by two other players who dominated for the Panthers before taking their game to the next level. While Ruben Brown was a stalwart on the line for the Bills and the Bears, earning nine Pro Bowls, it was Joe Schmidt who holds the Panthers record with 10. As a linebacker for the Lions, Schmidt was one of the greatest players at his position for much of the 1950s and 1960s, cementing him as one of the top players to ever come out of Pittsburgh.

Backyard Brawl Fans

The location of the Backyard Brawl alternates between the home fields of West Virginia and Pittsburgh, giving you two amazing venues that are always packed with great fans that know how to come out and show their support. For West Virginia, Mountaineer Field is their home field and Pittsburgh plays at Heinz Field, which is one of the most famous football venues around thanks to being the field of the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers. No matter the location, however, you're sure to find an amazing atmosphere that is filled with passion and energy whenever the Panthers take on the Mountaineers.
