About Barenaked Ladies

Barenaked Ladies was the musical brainchild of childhood friends Ed Robertson and Steven Page. While youth counselors at a Canadian summer camp, the two shared a similar love for music and frequently broke into impromptu jam sessions. Robertson, already a force on the local music scene, was part of a local cover band that would break up shortly before one of their scheduled gigs. Robertson called on Page, and the two formed Barenaked Ladies, playing their first show without having ever rehearsed and quickly snowballing into mainstays of the regional music scene. The band would soon expand, picking up brothers Andy and Jim Creeggan, as well as percussionist Tyler Stewart. Now producing their own tapes and touring to wider and wider audiences around Canada, eventually earning them a win at the YTV achievement awards, a major accolade that helped push the Barenaked Ladies further into the mainstream.

The band was struggling to receive a label signing, and was rejected by all major record companies that they attempted to court. Via a huge word of mouth campaign and through the roof sales for their self produced demo tapes, the band eventually got a deal with Reprise/Sire Records and would drop their mega hit debut album. Their debut would be the critical mass that the Barenaked Ladies needed, as the band's trajectory through the commercial mainstream proper began its rapid ascent.

The mid 90s would be a rough patch for the Barenaked Ladies, with growing tension between members and the departure of Andy Creeggan. In the face of the possible dissolution of the band, they signed under new management and released their third full length album, a huge success that landed Barenaked Ladies appearances or features on late night show Conan O'Brian, drama series Beverly Hill 90210, comedy sitcom Friends, and major motion picture The Wrong Guy. With the band's course corrected, Barenaked Ladies would continue their meteoric rise to the forefront of the alternative scene, today being one of the most fundamental and most recognizable figures in rock history.

Previous Hits

Perhaps the most recognizable album of the Barenaked Ladies discography to date is Stunt, the 1998 release that would move the band from a North American success story to staples of the North American alternative rock scene. Under the production tutelage of David Leonard and Susan Rogers, the album received over eight platinum certifications and broke the top twenty on Billboard in Canada, the US, and the United Kingdom. The album received overwhelmingly positive reviews, including a perfect score from Sputnikmusic, and spawned five addictive singles: "It's All Been Done", "Call and Answer", "Alcohol", "Told You So", and the mega hit "One Week". "One Week" would become the veritable anthem of the Barenaked Ladies, and remains their most well known hit to date.

Trivia

The band has been an early adopter of any up and coming technology when it comes to promoting their music. While this includes obvious innovations such as MySpace, it also includes advertising in the early 90s that was in part complemented by a viral floppy disk campaign.
