About The Beach Boys

Formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California, the Beach Boys' original lineup consisted of brothers Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, and Dennis Wilson, and their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. The Beach Boys were signed to Capitol Records in 1962, and gained popularity due to their unique harmony styles and themes about Southern California youth culture. At this time, Jardine left the band and was replaced by David Marks. The band released their first album Surfin' Safari, which reached number 32 on the US Billboard charts, and they continued to align themselves with the clean-cut, California youth style, singing about surfing, romance, and hot rods.

In 1962, the Beach Boys returned to the studio to begin recording their sophomore album, Surfin' U.S.A., which was slightly more surf-rock oriented. The album reached number two on the Billboard chart, launching the Beach Boys into the nationwide mainstream. Shortly after, the Beach Boys began touring the Midwest, and Jardine rejoined the band at the request of Brian Wilson.

Later in 1964, the Beach Boys released their single "I Get Around," which shot to the number one position on the Billboard chart, the first Beach Boys single to do so. The single's album All Summer Long was released shortly after and reached number four on the Billboard 200 charts. This album is widely regarded as one of the best of the Beach Boys' early records.

By the end of 1964, tour-related stress was beginning to be too much to handle for Brian Wilson, and he suffered an anxiety attack while on a flight, and abruptly left the tour. He officially announced his withdrawal from touring in January of 1965, opting to focus on songwriting instead. Glen Campbell would go on to replace Wilson in concerts, and later, Bruce Johnston would fill in and eventually become a full-time member of the bad.

Over the next several years, the Beach Boys would continue to release an assortment of successful albums and singles, including "Help Me, Rhonda," "California Girls," "The Little Girl I Once Knew," and "Barbara Ann."

During the latter half of the sixties, the Beach Boys began experimenting with the surreal, psychedelic music that was emerging at the time. In place of upbeat surf tunes, the Beach Boys began to write melodramatic, unconventional songs, the result of which is the groundbreaking record, Pet Sounds. The record was highly acclaimed by critics but it failed to initially become a commercial success. It has since generated a cult following, and remains one of the most innovative and influential pop albums in history.

Following Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson began to embark on another concept album, which came to be known as Smile. Wilson had planned on using their megahit "Good Vibrations" as part of the Smile project, but it remained a stand-alone single, which some consider to be one of the best rock singles of all time. Recordings for the Smile project started in 1966 and carried into 1967, and it is speculated that Wilson and songwriter Van Dyke Parks intended the album to be a continuous set of songs that were all linked together. Due to Brian Wilson's deteriorating mental health at the time, as well as other factors, work on Smile ceased in 1967, and the unfinished album became a legend. However, in 2011, The Smile Sessions was released, which was an approximation of what the completed album may have sounded like, using surviving recordings from Brian Wilson's initial attempt in the 60s. The album was met with critical acclaim and it was ranked #381 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It also won the Best Historical Album award at the 55th Grammy Awards.

The Beach Boys' Breakthrough Album

The Beach Boys' 1964 album All Summer Long was recorded in the aftermath of the British Invasion and still managed to rise to number four in the U.S., and remained on the charts for 49 straight weeks. The success of this album marked a turning point for the Beach Boys. Its single "I Get Around" earned them their first number one hit, and the album was certified gold by the RIAA.

The Beach Boys Trivia

While composing songs, Brian Wilson was rumored to have built a sandbox around his piano. He allegedly filled it with beach sand so he could get inspiration from feeling the sand beneath his toes.
