Founded in 1991 as a trio, Behemoth was originally comprised of Nergal
(guitar/vocals); Desecrator (guitar); and Baal (drums). They surfaced on the music scene with demos, "Endless Damnation" and
"The Return of the Northern Moon". But the demo that had the most impact was "From the Pagan Vastlands" (1993). Next came
"Sventevith" (Storming Near the Baltic), which arrived in 1995. In 1996, the cut the album, Grom. Grom includes varying musical
styles and inspirations, and features acoustic guitars and female voices. Around the same time, Behemoth played live concerts
in their native Poland, as well as toured Europe. With more stage experience under their belts, Behemoth stepped back into
the studio to record their third album, Pandemonic Incantations. After another tour, Behemoth inked a deal with Avantgarde
Music, based in Italy, in 1998. The new partnership produced the Satanica album. The label also set up two European tours
for Behemoth. Also during that time, Behemoth had to deal with some label issues as well as lineup changes. But they forged
ahead and put out their follow-up to Satanica, which was Thelema. 6. The album was supported by the media and global press,
including official releases in Brazil and Russia. Behemoth played several high-profile events like the With Full Force, Inferno
Metal Festival, Mystic Festival, Wacken Open Air and Mind Over Matter Autumn. They embarked on their debut headlining tour,
sharing the bill with Khold and Carpathian Forest, trailed by a festival tour in Poland.
In 2001, Behemoth set to work
on penning original material for their sixth studio album. They also closed out their sophomore headlining tour in Belarus,
Ukraine and Russia. In 2003, the band headed to Norway, taking the stage in cities like Stavanger, Oslo and Bergen. That same
year, they made their debut in the U.S. at the New Jersey Metalfest and continued to play at a number of venues throughout
the nation as well as Canada, sharing the bill with Vehemence, Amon Amarth, Revenge and Deicide. They continued globetrotting,
playing the Tuska Festival in Finland along with Soulfly and Ministry.
Demigod, their seventh studio album, arrived
in 2004. They continued to tour excessively throughout 2007 and 2008. In 2009, Evangelion was released. That same year, they
also participated in the Rockstar Mayhem Festival, along with metal bands like All That Remains, Trivium, Bullet for My Valentine,
Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Marilyn Manson and Job for a Cowboy. They headlined the New Evangelion Polish tour in the fall of
2009, and at the beginning of 2010, they embarked on a North American tour, the Evanglia Amerika Tour.
The band just
issued their tenth album, The Satanist, in February 2014, and they continue to take stages around the world!
To date, Behemoth's discography is comprised of: Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic) (1995); Grom (1996);
Pandemonic Incantations (1998); Satanica (1999); Thelema.6 (2000); Zos Kia Cultus (Here and Beyond) (2002); Demigod (2004);
The Apostasy (2007); Evangelion (2009); The Satanist (2014).
The All-Polish Committee
for Defense Against Sects circulated a list of bands that supposedly support murder and Satanism. Critics of this list view
it as a violation of free speech. The list has not been put into effect, and Behemoth continues to play freely in their home
country of Poland.
