Zack Condon grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and as a young teenager started doing his own recording music at home. Condon traveled across Europe after he dropped out of high school when he was 16. When Condon created Beirut he was inspired by the band The Magnetic Fields with his low, sad voice and lyrics. He created Beirut's album Gulag Orkestar and played the accordion, keyboards, saxophone, clarinet, mandolin, ukulele, horns, glockenspiel, and percussion on the album.
