Recognized for his vocals, on-stage performances and activism, Ben Harper was born in Pomona, Calif. Harper started playing guitar when he was a child. His maternal grandparents owned a music store, The Folk Music Center and Museum, which opened the door to discovery of blues and folk music for Harper. At the age of nine, Harper went to see reggae superstar Bob Marley, which Harper cites as a significant influence in his life. Three years later, Harper played his own debut gig.
