Best Coast Background

Best Coast initially took shape in 2009 when Bethany Cosentino, songwriter extraordinaire and vocalist, and Bobb Bruno, multi-instrumentalist, put their talents together. Cosentino already knew her way around the L.A. music scene, having performed in talent contests and auditioned for commercials. She took up penning music at the age of 15. Her early influences included folk icons and politically charged artists like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez and more contemporary musicians like Blink-182 and Weezer. Eventually, Cosentino started posting her music to MySpace. She used the moniker, Bethany Sharayah. Many major labels courted her during her teenage years but she declined the offers. She said in an interview with PopSense, "I had interest from major labels. And it was kind of overwhelming and I realized that I wasn't ready to be a 'pop princess.'"

In the mid-2000s, Cosentino was introduced to Amanda Brown, and it didn't take long for the pair to start jamming together in the band, Pocahaunted. Their union resulted in multiple cassette-only recordings, with the help of Bobb Bruno. Bruno himself was a well-established, multi-instrumentalist on the music scene. Cosentino left Pocahaunted to study creative nonfiction and journalism at the Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts in the Big Apple. During her time on the East Coast, Cosentino experienced seasonal depression. With the help of her family, she returned to her sunny and warm West Coast roots in 2009 and lived with her mom while working to get back on her feet. She took a job as a Lush sales associate part-time. She also got back into her music, leaning on her acoustic guitar to deal with her anxiety. Soon after she and Bruno began recording demos together in his home studio. "Sun Was High (And So Was I)" was their debut release - the first of a series of 7-inch tracks. To date, Best Coast has also issued three studio albums.

Best Coast Albums

Best Coasts's discography is comprised of three studio albums: Crazy for You (2010); The Only Place (2012); and Fade Away (2013). They also have EPs: Where the Boys Are (2009); Make You Mine (2009); Something in the Way (2010); Summer Is Forever (2011); and iTunes Session (2011).

Best Coast Trivia

Best Coast was initially influenced by The Beach Boys and The Beatles along with tunes of the 1950s and 1960s. Margaret Reges of Allmusic wrote, "Drawing inspiration from the 60s surf rock and girl groups, Best Coast's noisy lo-fi sound gave a nod to contemporaneous acts like Hot Lava, the Vivian Girls and Brilliant Colors."
