Big Ten Hockey Tournament Schedule

The Big Ten hockey conference is coming off of a successful first season in 2013-2014 which also featured the first ever Big Ten Hockey Tournament. Finally all of the hockey programs of schools in the Big Ten get to not only compete against one another in conference play but also in a post season conference tournament with higher seeds in the NCAA Tournament on the line. These are traditionally many of the best college hockey programs of all time and feature the best amateur hockey players in the world, many of whom go on to successful NHL careers.

Last year the Big Ten Hockey Tournament was held at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota but this year the tournament will take place at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan, home of the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL. Joe Louis Arena is one of the most well known and popular hockey arenas in the world and is the perfect place to take in a world class hockey event such as the Big Ten Hockey Tournament. Every team in the tournament will not only be looking to knock off conference rivals but also to finish the season on a winning note before entering the NCAA Hockey Tournament.

The Experience

Hockey fans in general, and college hockey fans specifically are by far some of the most raucous and intense to be found anywhere in the world of sports. The Big Ten is lucky enough to have some of the best fans in all of NCAA hockey and they really up the energy level when it is tournament time. From the second you enter Joe Louis Arena it is obvious that this will be a sports event like no other you have ever witnessed. The fans bring the arena to the point of exploding just before the puck drops for the opening face off and as the big time hits pile up, and the crack of big slapshots fill the arena the excitement only continues to build. Big plays that will get you out of your seat screaming and high fiving total strangers will have you eager to make a return to the next Big Ten Hockey Tournament game. All of this combines to make an electric environment when two of the best Big Ten Hockey teams take the ice and there is no other atmosphere in college hockey or perhaps all of college sports which matches that of thousands of hardcore hockey fans cheering and screaming for their favorite Big Ten team during the conference tournament.

Big Ten Hockey Tournament History

In the 2014-2015 season the Big Ten Hockey Conference will enter its second year and the 2015 conference tournament will only be the second ever. Wisconsin will enter the Big Ten Conference Tournament as the event's reigning champions but will face tough competition in the form of teams like Minnesota who made it all the way to the NCAA Championship Game last season and finished as runners up. Every other team in the conference will be gunning for both Wisconsin and Minnesota who emerged as the conference's top two teams last season. Of course any game in the Big Ten Hockey Tournament will feature two teams who have faced each other multiple times during the season and built up some bad blood between one another and the competition will be intense.

Big Ten Hockey Conference

The 2013-2014 season was the inaugural season Big Ten hockey and the conference immediately proved itself to be an NCAA hockey powerhouse. Two teams from the Big Ten earned number one seeds in the NCAA Tournament, Minnesota who was the number one overall seed and made it all the way to the Championship Game before finishing as runners up to Union, and Wisconsin who won the inaugural Big Ten Tournament. The dominance of the Big Ten should not be any surprise as it serves as home to the Michigan Wolverines who are tied with Boston College for the most Frozen Four appearances with 24 along with the Minnesota Golden Gophers who are tied for the second most Frozen Four Appearances with 21. Tough competition in the conference will only help to prepare Big Ten teams for deep runs in the NCAA Tournament each year.

There are six teams competing in Big Ten Hockey and each team is assigned a seed from 1 to 6 for the conference tournament. For the first four years the conference tournament is alternating locations between Xcel Energy Arena and Joe Lewis Arena. The Big Ten may be new as a college hockey conference but the athletic conference as a whole with its ties back to the old Western Conference is the oldest conference in the NCAA. Wisconsin, Northwestern, Michigan, Chicago, Minnesota, and Illinois were all founding members of the conference that would eventually go on to be known as the Big Ten.
