Billy Corgan was born March 17, 1967 in Illinois with a dad who played blues guitar. By the time Corgan was 14, he had learned to play the guitar and used great bands like Van Halen and Cheap Trick as influences. In 1985 Corgan put together the band The Marked and played the Chicago scene but the band broke up and Corgan started working at a record store where he got together The Smashing Pumpkins. The Smashing Pumpkins sound was a dark alternative metal sound which debuted in 1991 with Gish.
