Billy Idol Background
Born William Albert
Michael Broad in Middlesex, England, Billy Idol became enamored with rock and roll throughout his high school years. While
attending university, he became part of the Bromley Contingent, a group of die hard Sex Pistols followers. Every time he listened
to a Sex Pistols record or saw them perform live, he was inspired to do more than just watch and listen to great rock and
roll—he wanted to create it.
So in 1976, Billy Idol teamed up with Tony James, a lyricist and bass guitarist,
to join an established band, Chelsea. Not long after, they left Chelsea to form their own band, which they called Generation
X. The band didn't stay together long enough to achieve international success, but their 1980 single "Dancing with Myself"
became an instant hit both in England and in the U.S. The band broke up shortly after due to managerial problems. Although
this break up seemed like a major setback, especially after the success of "Dancing with Myself", Billy Idol decided to launch
his solo career, and in 1981, he headed to New York City.
Idol put together a team of established musicians and managers,
which included producer Keith Forsey, ex-KISS manager Bill Aucoin, and guitarist Steve Stevens. Along with his new group,
Idol's fame skyrocketed and he released four very successful records: Billy Idol, Rebel Yell, Whiplash Smile, and Vital Idol.
While Idol's party-hard lifestyle was legendary, his chart topping hits were even more legendary, and still remain popular
to this day. His overwhelming popularity during the '80s made him one of the leading public figures of the decade, and he
continued to spread punk rock music around the world.
Billy Idol is known for his extreme on-stage antics and his high-energy
performances, so this is one concert you definitely shouldn't miss. You can see this punk rock legend perform live by buying

Since launching his solo career in 1981, Billy Idol has released
seven albums, each of them selling quickly and becoming the immediate favorites of punk rock fans everywhere. Some of his
most popular singles include "White Wedding", "Hot In the City", "Rebel Yell", "Eyes Without a Face", and "Mony, Mony". He
released "White Wedding" in 1982, but it wasn't until 1985 that it started to make a splash worldwide. The song hit no.6 on
U.K. charts and made its way into the top 5 on the US Rock chart. The success of this single helped kindle the fire for Billy
Idol's career, and his songs became staples in the club scene and were adored by rock lovers everywhere.
His edgy sound
and unapologetic lyrics gained him not only the attention of fans, but also earned him many prestigious awards and nominations.
With three Grammy Award nominations, a MTV Video Music Award, and a BRIT Award, Billy Idol became one of the most awarded
mainstream rockers of the time.
Do you know how Billy Idol chose his name?
English literature at Sussex University, Billy Idol, then known as William Broad, often found trouble concentrating. When
