About the Artist
Born Leslie Charles in the Trinidad and Tobago, Billy Ocean and his family relocated to the
small suburb of London called Romford at the age of seven. Once in the UK, the young boy became interested in music, especially
legends like Otis Redding and The Beatles. His hard work and study of music paid off when Ocean, still going by his given
name of Les Charles, was signed by Spark Records, where he released his first hit "Love Really Hurts Without You" in 1976.
The song became a huge hit, as Charles officially became Billy Ocean, named after the estate in East London where he was living
at the time. "Love Really Hurts Without You" jumped to #2 on the UK charts, making Ocean a pop sensation. His second albumCity
Limit produced club hits like "Are You Ready?" and "Stay the Night", officially making Billy Ocean a full blown star in Europe
and in the US. His success reached new heights in 1984, when Ocean released his fifth album entitledSuddenly, which featured
some of his most famous songs. "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)" was a smash hit all over the globe, and put Billy
Ocean in the history books when the song earned him a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, making him for
the first British singer to do so. Suddenly was just the beginning for Billy Ocean, whose next two albums were also incredible
hits for the singer. Love Zone, featuring the hits the ballad "There Will Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)" and "When The Going
Get Tough, the Tough Get Going" went Gold in the UK and double platinum in the US. Love Zoneis heralded as his best album
and is by far his most successful. Billy Ocean followed up with his seventh studio album,Tear Down These Walls, in 1998, which
launched the hits "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car" and "The Colour of Love." As the 1980's came to a close, Billy Ocean
didn't find the successes that he had enjoyed earlier in his career, but has recently been honored with many Achievement Awards
and has been releasing new material in recent years, including the 2013 release ofHere You Are.
