BNP Paribas Open History

Originally known as the Indian Wells Masters, BNP Paribas serves as a Premier Mandatory stop on the women's tour and a Master's 1000 competition on the men's tour. Outside of the Grand Slam events, the BNP Paribas Open is the highest attended professional tennis tournament in the world averaging more than 370,000 attendees each year. The tournament is played on hard courts in the second largest tennis complex in the world. Aside from all of the exciting tennis action at the BNP Paribas Open, it is well worth a visit to Indian Wells Tennis Garden just to check out the venue. The men's portion of the tournament has gone under several names during the course of its existence including American Airlines Tennis Games, the Congoleum Classic, the Grand Marnier/ATP Tennis Games, the Pilot Pen Classic, the Newsweek Champions Cup, the Tennis Masters Series Indian Wells, and the Pacific Life Open before switching to its current name. The women's side of the tournament has also undergone several name changes before settling on the BNP Paribas Open including the Virginia Slims of Indian Wells, the Virginia Slims of Palm Springs, the Matrix Essentials Evert Cup, the Evert Cup or the State Farm Evert Cup as a tribute to Chris Evert, the Tennis Masters Series, and the Pacific Life Open.

On the men's side previous winners include Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Ivan Ljubicic, Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi, Michael Chang, Pete Sampras, Boris Becker, Jimmy Connors, Yannick Noah, and Roscoe Tanner just to name a few. The women's side features just as many luminaries of the tennis world including Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters, Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Martina Hingis, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, and Martina Navratilova among others. Clearly all of the biggest names in tennis take part in the BNP Paribas Open as they are drawn to the action at one of the top tennis facilities in the world and the energy of the numerous fans who make their way to Indian Wells each March

BNP Paribas Open ATP

In 1972 Donald Dell, Jack Kramer, and Cliff Drysdale formed the Association of Tennis Professionals in an effort to look out for the interests of male tennis players all over the world. For nearly twenty five years ATP has organized the professional tennis world tour for men (the women's tour is organized by WTA, the Women's Tennis Association) and stands as the official governing body of the sport. There are several events that are part of the tour and all serve to help decide which player deserves the top ranking in the world. The BNP Paribas brings together some of the top men's tennis players in the world acoording to the ATP as well as some of the top women according to WTA.

In the 2001 women's tournament, Venus and Serena Williams were set to face off against one another in the semi finals when Venus suddenly withdrew from the match due to an injury. There was wide speculation that Venus exaggerated the injury so as not to have to play her sister in the final. Serena was subsequently booed loudly in the finals, which she won, and the awards ceremony where she received the trophy. During the Ericson Open the next month, the Williams sister's father, Richard Williams, claimed that the girls would never play in the tournament again, and they haven't since.
