Boney James Background

Boney James was just eight years old when he picked up his first instrument, the clarinet. A couple of years later, he made the switch to the saxophone, which would prove to be one of the best choices he could ever make, as he is now considered one of the very best saxophonists in the entire world. While he was learning how to play the sax, James listened to artists like Grover Washington Jr., and he was inspired by Washington's gritty and alluring Motown jazz sound. When he was 14 years old, James' family moved to Los Angeles, where James got involved with a fusion band that became popular enough to open for bands like the Yellowjackets and Flora Purim. After graduating from UCLA, James decided that he needed to try and pursue music full-time, so he picked up the keyboards and joined Morris Day's band.

James spent years touring and working as a session musician for artists like Randy Crawford, Teena Marie, the Isley Brothers, and Bobby Caldwell, until he finally caught his big break in the early 1990s. After touring with Caldwell, James piqued the interest of producer Paul Brown, who helped James work on his debut album, Trust, which he released in 1992. The record was so successful that Warner Brothers decided to sign James in 1994, and shortly afterward James released a gold certified album, Seduction. Album after album, James continued to garner more avid fans around the world. He had quickly established himself as one of the most unique and exciting new artists on the jazz scene, and he had quickly taken his position in the jazz spotlight.

Most of James' records feature performances by major artists, such as George Benson, George Duke, Faith Evans, Dwele, Raheem DeVaughn, Philip Bailey, Hajeim, Angie Stone, Dave Hollister, and more. For his sensational work, James has even scored Grammy nominations and endless critical acclaim. Because of his impressive music resume, James sells out his shows time and time again, which is why you should act fast if you want to score a spot in the audience at one of his upcoming concerts!
