Boston City Hall Plaza History
Boston City Hall Plaza was designed in 1962 as a public space to accompany the adjacent
new City Hall. Both City Hall and City Hall Plaza were constructed between 1963 and 1968. The idea was to place the new City
hall on the old site of Scollay Square which had become one of the seedier parts of the city. The idea was successful and
it reinvigorated the immediate area, however City Hall Plaza has come under some scrutiny since its inception due to it not
being an ideal place for public gatherings since it is too cold and wet in the winter and too hot and dry in the summer. Plans
got underway to redesign both the plaza and City Hall in 2011 in response to the criticisms.
Boston City Hall
The most popular event held annually in Boston City Hall Plaza is the Boston Calling Music Festival. This
is a three day music festival that has featured such big name acts as Modest Mouse, Brand New, Death Cab for Cutie, Jack Johnson,
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero, and others. Throughout the year other events are held in the space including concerts,
public speeches, rallies, campaign events, and much more. There is no better way to get a feel for real Bostonian life than
by attending an event at Boston City Hall Plaza.
Boston is one of the most populous
cities int he United States and is brimming with things to do. The city boasts an incredible active and varied music, comedy,
and theater scene which offers quality entertainment any night of the week in rock clubs, theaters, and pubs. Of course there
is plenty of history in Boston as well, a simple walk along the Freedom Trail will show you several of the most significant
moments that led up to and occurred during the American Revolution. Of course, Boston is also known as one of the best sports
towns in the country. If you are in the city at the right time of year catching a Red Sox game at the historic Fenway Park
is a must, however Boston is also home to the Boston Celtics, one of the winningest franchises in the history of the NBA,
and the Boston Bruins of the NHL. The NFL's New England Patriots play just up the road in Foxborough, and there are also countless
local universities who compete in the highest level of college athletics.
Boston City Hall Plaza Seating Layout
City Hall Plaza is a big open space located adjacent to City Hall that invites all people in Boston to participate in events
in the area. There is no assigned seating or chairs, so any event is always general admission, allowing patrons to mix and
mingle and maybe make some new friends at the event.
The design for Boston City Hall Plaza was
based on Sienna, Italy's Piazza del Campo. Several citizens and groups have offered alternative designs for City Hall, including
students at Emerson College who designed a new City Hall using the computer game Second Life.
