As far as folk goes, the Bowerbirds are—well, they're odd birds. Their music clearly is influenced by traditional
folk and folk-rock, but it also features non-traditional instruments like accordions and marching band drums. There are
plenty of unexpected left turns in their music that might make you scratch your head at first, then grin as you realize how
original their music is. Get concert tickets and see them live!
The Bowerbirds are a duo that formed in Raleigh, NC, growing out of the indie rock band Ticonderoga. Vocalist Phil Moore,
a member of that band, moved out to a cabin in the woods to track birds for his job with the North Carolina Museum of Natural
Sciences. His girlfriend, Beth Tacular, moved in with him, and their experience living in nature inspired them to write some
folk-based songs.
In 2007, the Bowerbirds released their debut album, Hymns for a Dark Horse. The sounds they produced enchanted critics
and quickly developed them a following. They're somewhat lazily classified as "acid folk" sometimes, but that
belies the originality in their work. If you like folk music, and you're a bit outdoorsy, try something a little different
and get Bowerbirds tickets.
