Not only has
Boy George a talented and accomplished singer, but he has also tried his hand at acting. He guest-starred on a 1986 episode
of The A-Team, where he played himself. The title of the iconic episode was called "Cowboy George."
Boy George was born George Alan O'Dowd in Kent, England. He was one of six children and had a fairly typical
suburban childhood. He began following the New Romantic movement during the 1980s and started visiting clubs in Central London.
After appearances in Boy George's typical androgynous style of dressing, he caught the attention of former Sex Pistols manager
Malcolm McLaren. McLaren arranged for the singer to perform with the group Bow Wow Wow. But due to creative differences with
the lead singer of the group, George decided to leave the group to create his own band. It consisted of bassist Mikey Craig,
drummer Jon Moss and guitarist and keyboardist, Roy Hay. Because each band member came from vastly different ethnic backgrounds,
they decided on the name Culture Club. The band was successful right out of the gate, releasing their hit album Kissing to
Be Clever in 1982. The album spawned their first No. 1 hit single entitled, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?"
Club disbanded in the late 1980s, and Boy George began to focus on his solo career. He signed with Virgin Records, and released
his first album, Sold, in 1987. The album spawned several hits including "Everything I Own," "Keep Me in Mind," "To be Reborn"
and "Sold." George continued to have success throughout the 1980s and in 1992, his song "The Crying Game," which was featured
on the soundtrack of the same name, became a surprise hit. It reached the Top 20 in the US, and did well internationally as
well. As the 90s waned, George began to change his sound, collaborating with dance-oriented musicians. His song "When Will
You Learn" was a hit internationally and earned the singer a Grammy nomination. George has continued to transform himself
again and again since then. He starred in the musical, Taboo, which is based on his life and earned a Tony Award for "Best
Musical Score." And he has had countless other projects including a career as an electronic artist under the pseudonym "The
Twin" and as a songwriter, helping to pen the hit song "You're Beautiful" with singer James Blunt.
